Hi all
Quick question about the MAF sensor.

I've a 2006 TD5 110 XS with 92,000 on the clock, so it still has plenty of life left. My question regards the longevity of the MAF sensor as I am only getting 3 to 4 months out of mine (genuine part), is this normal or could I have another issue which causes the MAF to fail.
The engine has been tuned (slightly) by Alive but no over fuelling as diesels have enough bad press without me chucking a load of black smoke when accelerating. I also have a Mantec snorkel fitted with a standard air filter.
I've decided to buy an aftermarket part (well, two actually) from Paddock spares for about £52 pounds because at that price its a bit more affordable when they go rather than the £80+ for a genuine one.

3 to 4 months out of a MAF sensor? Something up there
Are they really oily? Turbo starting to leak oil maybe
 
Are you buying a Genuine Land Rover in a Land Rover box? Or vdo?
You got me there.. Last one was VDO and came in a white box, i purchased it from one of the main Land Rover online retailers (can't remember which) and it was listed as genuine, therefore I believe I had a genuine one fitted.. I've just installed one from Britpart which came in a brown box, wrapped in brown greaseproof paper and had two plastic caps (one either end of the sensor) fitted..

Genuine should be in a Land Rover box not the white one...
 
Ok.. i did not know that.. i assumed that "genuine" online was an actual genuine part.. Ok, so i need to go to my local Land Rover dealer and purchase one of theirs..

Surprised the Siemens VDO one was no good, would have thought they would know how to build things. I'll bear that in mind next time I change mine
 
As part of the tuning, did you get one of those re-usable air filters? ITG or K & N or some such? Some people complain that the oil from them finds its way into the MAF and damages it. If you go back to a conventional filter it shouldn't shave too much off your performance and it might make your MAF last a bit better

Nope, I use a standard air filter and the sensors always looks clean

OK, probably not that then. I'm still using the same one that was on the car when I bought it, nearly 80,000 miles ago. I keep expecting it to malfunction, given the trouble people have here, but so far so good.
 
Might be a silly question .... but how are your determining they are broken. They only have a simple job to do - it's essentially a thin wire that circuitry attempts to keep at a constant temperature - the energy required to keep it at that temperature is directly proportional to the air flow - hence it measures air flow rate and sends the reading to the ECU to do its magic with. There is a very simple test you can do with a multimeter on the MAF sensor. Great video on the link below. Worth asking because every time I find a symptom that might be related to the MAF sensor - it turns out to be something else - if it is burning out, is there are problem with regulation of the 12v supply. Also many say that even if you disconnect the MAF there is very little difference to the running of the engine - what are your symptoms?

 
Just to mention again, l have a 2005 TD5 110 SW
I had an Alive remap and had the same issues as you.
I had it reset to factory tune and it was fine after that.
Most people seem to have no problem with Alive or other remaps, but l have had the same problem as you.
Get the ECU reset to factory settings, if the fault is still there l am sure Alive will re install their software for a small fee if you tell them the vehicle went in to Land Rover and they updated the ECU
