My TD5 gearbox is difficult on gear selection, sometimes no bother but more often than not its difficult to get into 1st gear and reverse gear, 2nd a little difficult but the others no problem, there seems plenty of bite on the clutch and its not slipping. I thought this was normal until i drove a mates td5, it was so smooth in gear change it made mine feel like a tractor. Any ideas what could be wrong?
 
Hi just a couple of pointers ,it may be worth checking to see what oil is in the box.Landrover no longer reccomend ATF but MTF 74in the main box.If you are feeling flush you could try Diff locks evo 1 gear oil (reputed to be the dogs ********)
I am just about to go down the MTF route myself but with a dollop of gearbox conditioner thrown in (Molyslip i think).
 
Make quite sure the clutch fluid is well up, and the clutch isn't dragging.

A dragging clutch causes almost no bother when you are on the move, changing gear and all. But because of the synchromesh a dragging clutch can make it a bugger to get into gear when the car is stopped.

Does it crash-crunch getting it into backwards gear?
STIFF trying to get first?

it dosen't grind or crunch the cogs its just very stiff into 1st and reverse especially when stationary
 
I Have the same problem with mine although it seems to get better when warmed after a bit of driving, gonna change all oils at the weekend anyone know where to get official LR oil recomendations ? noticed people talking about a change from ATF to MTF 74,

i will give the gearbox a good clean i have been through a load of crap lately, would this make a difference
 
hi have the same problem with mine 2nd gear is very notchy you can almost feel the gears engaging which again completely disappears once the gear box is warm i got to say it you don't half have some problems for such an expensive vehicle mines only done 80000 which is nothing for a modern vehicle other problems are 2 very leaky sun roofs and a slight leak on the transfer box? any body Else got the same problems or may be an idea whats wrong with the gearbox

I am having trouble selecting second gear, this only happens when the gearbox/engine is cold. I find I have to let the revs drop right down before using a bit of pressure and persuade it in, doubling the clutch doesn't seem to help.

I have only recently purchased the discovery (2002 td5 manual) but it has recently been serviced and the gearbox was apparently topped up. Would it be worth trying replacing the gearbox oil?

Also I was reading on another forum page about difficulties changing the oil as it has to be pumped in. If you go to a local Chandlers (marine shop) or someone who deals in outboard marine engines, they will sell a small hand pump which it used to pump the oil into outboard engine gearboxes. Should work well with minimal mess.

Any help would be much appreciated.

We've all got leaky sunroofs EXCEPT CharlesY!:mad:
 
Don't know about stiff gearbox but on mine (2003 TD5 XS) the gear lever seems to stiffen up after a few miles (oh er mother!!) and its difficult to find the gate as the bias springs can't work. Anyone had anything like this?

If the clutch was dragging would the gear change be a problem in all gears and would it also happen if when the engine was warm? If not then how can you tell?

It does seam to improve after a service (only for a short period) I also have a leak between the rear axel and propshaft I am not sure if that would make a difference when it goes back to have it fixed.

When she grinds into gear and creaks and rattles when I go over bumps I am just thankfull it does not have a sunroof!!

I would just go for the oil mate

molyslip might work too well

i've found that, in some boxes, if the oil is too slippery the synchromesh can sometimes not do its job properly. I've not tried it in the R380 box though to be fair.

MTF 94 is the right gearbox oil for the R380 from 1998 onwards

but if you car was built january 1994 to january 1998 R380 then ATF is still the recommended oil
 
Cheers I have tried the MTF 94 but it made no difference. It does apear to be a fairly common problem, I am sure that all the gearboxes don't need replacing. Well if it does I will nurse this one!
There is another oil I read about thay may be worth a try its ment to be better than the MTF 94, it was mentioned in a previous forum.
I have a 02 discovery.
