Help needed quick I've a small oil leak around the gearbox and now the gears are near impossible to change. Need to know what is the best oil to fill it back up with and how much do i need, plan to empty the gearbox and put new stuff in, I'm sure the leak is from the sump plug

Hi John,

I assume it is a TD5 defender. Just to use the right book. This is from teh Defender 02MY handbook.

Make sure you can take out the filling plug, before you take out the drain plug.

Cheers

Thank you for your reply, now I know were the Drain plug is not sure about the Filling plug, yup your right Its a TD5 Defender 2003 and I'm a muppet for not servicing it properly but in my defence I've only had it under a year and I've been really busy with other jobs.

@John03

It is all shown in the workshop manual.
Have you got a workshop manual / Rave?

If not then I will paste the link where you can download it from onto the computer.

Cheers

Nope sorry its on a list of stuff that I was intending to buy but never got round to it

is Texaco the only oil I can use as local Halfords do not do it. Cant find it on Eurocarparts. Need to get it sorted by end of day tomorrow and cant find anywhere local

Try calling Eurocarparts and asking , they used to do it. But it does not have to be Texaco,

Cheers

Plus you need to make sure you have a way of filling the gearbox.

I used a new 5 litre garden pressure spayer.

Cheers

Ok having real problems here. I cant get the filler plug undone on the gear box T55 torx, I've rounded it off now. But I'm wondering if it is lack of oil in the gear box thats causing the problem. I cant change gear when engine running, but can when switched off. There is a little bit of bite when I put it in to gear then switch engine on but not enough to move it, help me please I got alone of garage space tonight to fix it under the promise I'd be gone by morning
