Hi all,
Fitting a new front pulley at the moment, have a new bolt.
The question is do I put oil on the thread & under the head?
The workshop manual just says to fit the bolt & tension it, nothing else.
Any help would be appreciated - Thanks - Leigh

Assuming the engine is a TD5 and that you mean the crank pulley the bolt is fitted dry but must be torqued correctly

The Range Rover man in Melbourne said to put engine oil on the bolt & we tensioned it to 460N/m, we did it & it went OK
As a reference we set the small tension wrench to 100N/m & tightened to that to start off, and then marked the bolt & pulley & then went with the 1000N/m tension wrench to 460N/m the bolt moved an extra 2 flats (120°)
We hope this gives us a base angle torque for next time for a bush emergency. (In the outback it is not easy to find an 1'' - 3/4" tension wrench)
P/S Engine had TD5 written on it, 5cyl, Wastegated turbo, Unit injector type, EGR, auto trans & alum. radiator & intercooler. Australian ADR plate.

What ever your tourque wrench setting was it became redundant the moment you put oil on the thread, you will get a false reading and in any even it will work itself loose. Not a good move mate. Plenty of video's on you tube about tourque settings and oil on threads.

The Melbourne dealer where the vehicle owner bought the new pulley & bolt is a mate of his, so if there is any
trouble we will put it back on him, I did not want to use oil at all, we showed him the page out of the shop manual, it was his recommendation. I was waiting to hear back from you guys, but the owner wanted the vehicle urgently.
