After a long run down to Devon towing my car developed a rattle from the top end I think. I checked the oil and found it right down on the dipstick so toppped it up but the rattle is still there. The oil light never came on so im hoping I still had good oil pressure and didn't do too much damage :(. Ive checked the turbo and all seems ok.

The engine sounds fine when not under load but anything over 2000rpm the rattle comes in. Its an auto so almost impossible to drive keeping it under 2000rpm! If I didn't know better I say it was tappets but I know it has hydraulic cam follows. Could this be the problem? Engine temperature dosen't seem to make the noise and worse or better.

It also has a whine when you accelerate that sounds like belts but Ive replaced the belts and tensioner which has not solved the issue.

I intend to strip the head at the weekend and check the cam follows, check the injector valve clearances and the exhaust manifold as I know that can be the cause of the whine.

Have you changed fuel filter ! Is the noise coming from the fuel tank !! Pumps can make a terrible noise if there is crap in the filter or lines !! Also the fuel presure regulator on the block can make noise and cause reduced power!!

It may be worth introducing yourself here before asking for help ! Not all members are so happy to help unless You ask nicely!!!
