Hi,

I'm thinking of having my TD5 remapped. I've heard various stories about the pro's and con's with some people saying it makes a big difference to other says it's not worth doing due to increasing complications.

I'm keen to know your views!

Properly remapped ECU by somebody who knows what they're doing is usually good.
Those "bolt on boxes" which say they will give you 3 times the power for half the fuel? Snake oil.

Plenty of stories about remapping here on the forum; search for them.
 
As ^^^^ avoid ebay specials and plug in boxes, go to a pro and you'll be happy - we had our Td5 remapped by Alive Tuning and were delighted with it - it transformed the behaviour and feel of the truck. I'd def go back to them if I had another Td5, plus you can get discounts if you visit them at a show.
 
Had my 2003 auto done by dynachip and very happy with the improved drivability. Cant see the downside?
 
Call Dynachip and do it. My Defender is much more spritely, much more torque, not so scary pulling out of juctions, can actuallly over take! Actual power is there when you need it.

Also currently averaging 29 - 32mpg.

Already saving for a bigger intercooler.
 
Cons: with unknown upgrade on mine before I bought it, 2x warped exhaust manifolds, cured now with machined manifold and JD Engineering uprated stud kit.

be aware, if that was caused by the fuel map it means there are higher than admitted EGTs and that will affect more than just the manifold, it can cause serious damage... some uprated studs won't cure the overfueling if that's the cause... so if you suspect that the manifold was affected by the fuel map fit a EGT gauge ASAP.
 
I am delighted by my remap. Done at a proper garage. Discovery 2 now drives like a car. Had to change gear a lot before.

Hey - I know this post is old but for anyone else coming across this ... I had my 2007 TD5 remapped 2 days ago by Mike from DynaChip (http://www.dynachip.co.uk/). I was so impressed with the service I said I would post a review somewhere, so this is it ... He was very quick to respond to my text message and took my phone call first time, he also came round to my house after 18:00 to do the work which took around an hour. Really knowledgeable and friendly chap. As far as my car is concerned, there is a huge improvement. I can't do mpg improvement etc yet as it has only been 2 days, but driving it is a lot nicer, for example I no longer have to change gears twice to go round a sharp turn :) Engine noise is the same so did not lose out on the lovely grumble. All in all, really happy. Worth speaking to him if you fancy doing the same.

Is your vehicle std apart from the remap? which remap did you get. Also what sort of ballpark price are we looking at?
Keep thinking my D2 needs this,

Hi - Yep, bog standard. I do not know what the type of remap it was, Mike (the guy from Dynachip) will be able to tell you. Price on his site is £250 I think or thereabouts.
 
IMO before the remap you should do the mechanical tuning like, de-EGR, straight through exhaust and performance intercooler ... a remap will be really efficient with these already done
 
Hi everyone, considering remap my disco 2 td5 2004, after sand driving with some of my friends with disco 3 and Toyota. My disco was so letargic comparing to them so I thought it would be a good idea...
Sierrafery, I understand It would be better to upgrade the intercooler and the exhaused manifold first but is it a must thing to do or it is something I can do after a while with the budget limitation schedule
 
Hi, you can remap it without anything else if that's what you want though better compare your td5's performance with other td5 not with a more powerfull vehicle also before a remap make sure that your engine is working at it's optimal performance cos if something is wrong with it a remap is feckless. If you still have the catalyst you should get rid of it before a remap that's the least you can do. Do you have bigger than standard tyres?

First, checking prefomence of the engine can be done by connecting it to the nanocom? I can ask my meckanic to do that, thanks for the advice.
Taking the Catalizator off (part of the exhaust if I understand correctly) is not legal here so it makes all the idea irrelevant.
My tires are still standard size although I am thing of replace them with a bigger one (legal issue as well)
 
Yes, a nanocom fuelling inputs log would show if something is wrong, bigger tyres have negative effect for the performance and management, you stress the engine for few cms of ground clearance, not worth it IMO.
