Just got hold of a nice 110 TD5, 114k on the clock and clean as a whistle. Bought it up where my parents live in Suffolk and drove it back to my ends in Bath via a Cirencester stop over at the missus.
After a few hours it started developing a horrendous rattling noise that seemed to be coming from under the centre of the dash. That got louder and louder and louder. By the time I got to Cirencester the radio was on full just to block it out. Sorry in advance for these descriptions.
It sounded almost like the noise a heat shield makes when its loose or has a loose bolt. It got louder with the RPM of the engine and when I was farming down the M5 I'd chuck it in neutral and it would dissipate but if I feathered the throttle you could hear it, again getting louder with the increased RPM. Now I think of it in a way kind of sounded like the noise a 2 stoke dirt bike makes when you rag it on full throttle.
The next day I drove it from Cirencester to Bath and again towards the end of the journey I got the rattle, again same symptoms. Louder with RPM.
Also louder up hill, quite down hill.
Its spent the past week with Steve Hill over in Bristol and sadly he can't find anything. He suspects it could be a spigot bushing or release bearing failed then becoming an issue with the increased friction and so on creating the noise. I think he's right. Its in that area, issue is if I do that makes sense to do clutch and DMF (me and the old man think it could be the DMF). Its an ex-police car with paperwork showing clutch replaced at 40k but no sign of the DMF and being on 114k now surely is curtains for it soon.
Basically asking on here to see if anyones had the same noise or similar and I'm not missing something obvious or unthought of!
