After years of longing and lurking on here I have finally got myself a Land Rover! Not quite as I had imagined all the same, I'd always imagined a Defender or a Series III but the Discovery was a happy medium between a Defender and a Range Rover.

So, 2004 TD5 with 84k on it and literally got it at a steal. Its had a new rear quarter chassis fitted, poly bushes all round, new shocks and rear spring conversion. Needs a few small things done but nothing serious. Love the full leather and heated seats etc.

Started tonight by tackling a little rust in the window frames. I gather that the door needs stripped down to do it properly but in the mean time I've treated it with some Vactan rust converter to try and slow it down.

Next on the list is getting the oil in the gearbox changed and under sealing the underside to let me do a little off roading in it. Loving Landy life so far!

So, all is going well but have a question - when i start the landy, as soon as the ignition has engaged and started and i let go of the key theres a noise from the engine bay, it more noticeable in the cabin that if im outside so im assuming its near the bulkhead. Sounds like little a burp, maybe a spring or something pinging but it isnt high pitched and only lasts maybe half a second or so? Anyway, it doesn't impede anything, its just a very strange sound. Any ideas?

Have you got air suspension?

Cheers

no, its had a rear spring conversion. i was ignoring it as i thought it might be the compressor but was under the impression its in the boot?

ive since been informed its the brakes (ABS) and isnt anything to worry about so i can ignore that. took a few minutes easier to give the door hinges a quick grease so now the doors are a little smoother to open and dont make just as much racket.

the first niggle has reared its head though, the rear passenger door wont unlock, either with the remote or the button on the dash. it will only lock when the car moves off and the rest all lock automatically. so, need to check connections etc but from what ive read a new actuator/solenoid might be needed.

Gearbox oil changed during a snow flurry but after a quick run around the new oil seems to make the world of difference. Second is no longer a fight so hopefully it’ll remain as such. That said, the old drain plug looked like a Christmas tree which is rather worrying.

I wouldn't worry too much about that mate, half of it's probably from manufacturing detritus when it was put together!
Did you sort your door lock? I've got same year as you same colour but only pursuit trim. I've changed 1 rear passenger door lock and the tailgate lock. Also need to look at my window frames and above windscreen rust wise and I've got the gearbox oil ready to replace so glad to hear it's made a difference to yours, 2nd is a bit graunchy when cold

Thanks fellas, the oil itself was like beige paint and it had a horrible smell, by the looks of it, it wasn't great and hadn't been touched for a long while. As you both have said, I'll likely flush it through after 1k or so, maybe less, and take the last of the bad oil out.

I've used this - https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/...matic-transmission-fluids/?522776011&&cc5_869. I know its not the correct oil as specified by Land Rover but after looking through the web and multiple people giving contradicting information, I found Ashcroft transmissions website who recommended it over Land Rover's alternative. Used Euro Car Parts discount code for the end February and got it for £25 or thereabouts so happy at that.

As for the lock, no, I've not looked at it yet. I have one ordered though and providing I've ordered the correct one it should be fixed come the Easter break. When the window frames are out I'll get a look at those too since they more or less will need removed at that stage anyway. The top of my windscreen needs attention too, it's starting to look a little tired so come the summer I'm going to speak to the paint shop that have my Beetle and see what they can do.

I got some MTF94 in land rover branded bottles from rimerbros can't remember the price. I think Ashcroft used to recommend the MTF then changed to ATF. I may be mistaken but sure someone on here mentioned it recently.

Wish I'd done my frames when I changed the 1 lock but it was cold and I was on nights so meh :D

I'm thinking just pull rubber seal away, sand right down, prime and paint before sealing rubber trim with sika or similar. I need to look at cant rails and tailgate seal as I've got a few minor leaks which I don't want developing into electrical gremlins

I had thought about rubbing back and treating it and then maybe wrapping it with something but that might compound the issue. Dreading what I'll find under the seal, mine looks like the paint has withered with few rust veins appearing. as for the frames, i made a point of getting some rattle can hycote satin black as its meant to be a near exact match but im dreading spraying it on and then have it lift in a year or so.

have you come across any weather seals for the doors at all, from what i can see, theyre not made anymore.

Nice, never had a disco but if I had it would have been one of those D2 facelift jobbies, enjoy.

Many thanks, had to be a facelift when i started looking about 12 months ago.

Exactly what I'm going to do. Get rid of as much rust as possible, treat it, prime it then use a near as **** it colour match with some lacquer and mastic the rubber seal down. There's a bible knocking around for all things disco 2 leaks, think @brian47 has the link? Havent seen any door seals but havnt really looked yet tbf, the list of essential maintenance is too long at the moment!
Edit It was the workshop manuals on discovery 2 water ingress and water ingress to headliner I downloaded from a link provided by a member on here in pdf form

Disco door seals are still available, here's a link to some suppliers on the bay:-

Regarding the moisture ingress "bible", this is just something I've put together from stuff I've found myself and some which has been found by others. I've placed them as an attatchment.
