So,low range works on my td5,but when I move it over to lock diffs the light doesn't come on,and I can't tell if it's locked or not-how do I ascertain if it's a electrical or transmission issue,or another...?

I hear a metallic clunk when I engage diff-lock on my 300Tdi, have no experience with Td5. I'd say check the instrument panel bulb but I think yours is a lot more complex than that.

The instrument panel light is actually an LED so without stripping the clocks you cant change it.

My guess would be that the diff lock light switch has died. Try unplugging the switch on top of the front output of the transfer box. Bridge the wires and see if it puts your light on.

If it does, get a new switch.

Is it posible to access the diff lock sensor/switch from underneath? Maybe just to jiggle the wires a bit...

Having soundproofed the inside I don't really want to start pulling it all apart!

yes ,is easier with prop off ,switches are prone to fail (prc2911)and shouldnt be wound in to far as will jam difflock selector which you will only know by jacking up front wheel and checking

Out of interest, does the diff lock indicator light circuit involve the ECU for anything... I am aware that the high-low sensor changes throttle response?

The switch for that is a different switch and located above the diff lock light switch
