Hi, I have just got my first defender 110. The other day I broke down in clouds of white smoke. I have been told that I have diesel in the sump oil which is being taken into the cylinder and therefore white smoke.

Any ideas?

Thanks Redhand: The oil has been changed and it runs fine I have traveled another 20 miles or so and it pull as normal. A landrover engineer suggested a worn oil seal on one of the diesel injectors? This is a PD engine type? so I have been told which is fitted to some French vehicles and is a common problem so they tell me, I run a shop so wat do I know!

Sounds like an head gasket failure. It could be leaking diesel down one of the oilways. but that wouldn't allow it back into the cylinder. Very badly worn piston rings would but then it wouldn't run very well, loss of power, oil been forced out of the breather etc etc. If it's just the white smoke then HGF sounds like the problem. Who made the diagnosis, how did he arrive at his conclusions.

Could be Fuel cooler o-rings stuffed. If it is leaking, don't buy one from a LR stealer, take it apart and go to a decent place and buy a couple of o-rings. Costs about a thousandth of their price.

Many thanks for your reply.

I have arranged for the injectors to be checked on Tuesday and will get the O rings from a decent supplier.

Thanks again
