Anybody swapped out there pre td5 dash for the td5 and how hard is it?

Icant see it being that difficult but wouldnt mind just asking just incase

Thanks

Depends what you mean by dash. If you just mean the instrument binnacle, instruments and warning light panel then that is fairly simple. See here:

Installing a Defender Td5 Instrument Pack into a 200Tdi/300Tdi - Land Rover Technical Blog

If you want to swap the whole dash for the post-2002 affair then that is more involved due to the moving of various electrical switches etc. but it's nothing insurmountable.

wiltshire: The Td5 instruments are properly backlit like a modern car, so one can actually see them at night properly. And being electronic the speedo needle doesn't wobble about like the old one does when the drive cable wears. Plus the LED warning lights are far more visible and just look 100x better.

so all u gain is some brighter dials and a needle that dont wobble, that i assume is if u also swap the electronics to make the cable driven speedo now electronic
brighter dash bulbs are available on ebay for pennys..
seems like a lot of hassle for very little gain to me

My dash is looking in a pretty sorry state so i thought i might as well update it as i was going to put a new dash in anyways just thought i'd maybe go for somthing newer but if its a ball ache to fit i'll just stick with the standard one

Yeah, that's "all I gain". But that can be said for anything. I've spent hours soundproofing my 90 and "all I've gained" is a quieter car, but it was still worth doing it!

You are correct in that the speedo drive has to be swapped for the electronic transducer, which goes into the transfer box in place of the cable.

The brighter bulbs/LEDs on eBay improve brightness but do not address the issue of the gauges being of a poor 1980s design. The Td5 dash being far newer uses better backlighting techniques as per all modern cars, which is why they are far more readable even though they use much smaller bulbs than the older ones.

If you can wire a plug then you can do it.
