I've found a few threads on this and can't seem to find an answer so.....
My 1999 TD5 auto has a vibration evident at about 2250 - 2400 rpm, it is engine speed related, not drivetrain as the vibration occurs in all 4 gears under load.
I've already discounted the fan and viscous coupling as it makes the vibration with that removed ( although it revs better too :D:D ) and it's not the bottom pulley / harmonic damper as that's been changed recently and it vibrated before the replacement was fitted, so does anyone have any ideas or pointers?
Cheers all.

Whats the condition of the ATF and has it ever been serviced?

is there a delay when selecting gears??

Thats one to think about, atf is fairly clean and doesn't smell off, even so I may try a new filter and oil replacement although it changes really well and the problem occurs in all 4 gears...... mind you, one side of the torque convertor spins at engine speed so it could be something to do with it.

Is it a problem that is apparent all the time or does it appear after a few miles of driving?

is it worse/better when hot?

Mine (manual) has vibration between about 2500-3000. I have also checked everithing and it seems that coming from handbrake. Try to put your hand on your handbrake lever (grab it) and see if it changes. When I grab it vibration stops, if I pull it a few mm also stops. Maybe I should change the cable or adjust.
What is strange that in my case the vibration also happens in all gears and depending only on engine speed, so I do not see the connection between this and the handbrake (as it turns in different speed) but somehow it transfered through the handbrake cable:confused:

Nope, same when cold and hot and its there from starting until journeys end

Engine mounts?

Thanks

Hmmmm, I'll give that a try even though for the life of me can't see how it works, but who cares, if it works it works!

I also do not have idea how it is connected to engine rpm but the noise comes from that area in my case. But I can imagine that the hand brake lever assembly somehow makes a certain engine vibration audible.

Are we talking an annoying rattle or a vibration that makes the whole car shake?
It sounds as though you have a harmonic somewhere at around 2500-3000 rpm. If it is audible but not felt, then it could be something minor and probably inconsequential, magnified by the harmonics of something like the handbrake assembly - If putting a click or two on the handbrake makes it go away, then you can probably just adjust the cable to change the harmonic.
OTOH If you can feel it through the seat then I would suspect a worn engine mount and you need to take action.
I would get someone to slowly increase revs into the critical band whilst you watch and feel the engine closely for a visible increase in vibration. A hand on the plastic engine cover should indicate if the engine itself is vibrating more at the critical rev range. If it is replace the engine mounts.
Not done it myself, but I understand that the left and right mounts can be replaced with about a 25cm tilt.

This exactly describes my case:) The vibration is somehow in connection with the position of the handbrake cabel.
