Hoping someone can maybe help me with my decision....
Discovered an oil leak which appears to be coming from the front n/s corner of the main gearbox just above the sump pan. I put a litre of oil in it last night but still nothing coming out the level hole so gonna have to go get some more.
My dilemma is....do I nurse it...do I try one of those gasket sealants or do I drop the box :'(.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi there, when you checked the oil level in the autobox, was the engine running or not.

1. If the engine was not running and you put in approx 1ltr of oil and nothing came back out of the level/fill plug hole, the 'box is WAY down on oil that it needs.

2. Have you gone around all the sump bolts and just nipped them up a bit - not too much as they don't need a lot of torque - 8 n/m according to Rave.

3. If in any doubt why don't you drain the oil, replace the autobox filter and and gasket and then re-fill with oil? You'll need 5 ltrs of oil and an autobox filter kit.

Good luck

Dave

Hi Dave, the engine was running while I was filling with oil, I also had my son ready to go up and down the gears once oil started coming out but the box took the whole bottle.
I also nipped up the sump bolts, but the leak is definitely coming from between gearbox and the casing leading up to the engine (bellhousing ?)

Hi Grant, have you put any more oil in, so that you know it's full? Without sufficient oil in the 'box you risk damaging it.

I'll go get some after work and fill the sump till it starts to come out the filler hole and get the lad to run up and down the box while I fill it... All with the engine running. I'll keep an eye on it for the time being, its just that I'm heading up to The Isle of Skye on Sat for a week and I'll probably do around 700 miles...
I've had a look at these sealants but I'm not convinced.

its not to uncommon for them to leak between pump plate and box ,box would need to come out and new gasket fitted often caused by bellhousing bolts becoming looser than they should be

I've just put another litre and a half into the box, that's it now level, just need to keep an eye on it...
Does anyone know the going rate for a gearbox out job ? I've tackled a few MG's over the years, but I think this is out of my league.
Also should I have the box reconditioned, she's done 148,000 and runs sweet ?

Thanks for all replies

Grant
