Posting this one on behalf of a friend that's not too clued up on mechanical stuff.

He has a TD5 Auto, he has lost all drive completely, Engine still turns over fine though. I found a post from James Marten, about it and he said about a clutch pack A may be gone if it's not got forward drive but has reverse, but having seen his disco my friends hasn't got either forward or reverse.

there sounds to be something metallic rattling when it's in gears and I think when it's in neutral also.

has anyone had experience with this before? the disco's done about 120K miles

Thanks

Martin

sounds exactly like mine. had a rattle for a while which sounded like an exhaust rattle. i discovered after i lost drive (unless i revved it and it clunked into gear) that it was the flex plate cracked. after much investigation, i'm getting a 2nd hand box fitted next week...

why are you changeing the gearbox if the drive plate has cracked ?? there only about £20 or a heavy duty one from ashcroft £65,replacing the gearbox alone wont solve your problem the drive plate needs doing also

no mate, gearbox is fooked- most likely due to driving around with a cracked flex plate thinking it was an exhaust rattle
believe me- i wish it was just the flex plate!

ok mate i feel your pain, thought mine was cracked but is fine still got a rattle like you describe, did your box go into limp home mode with the two green lights on the dash and d flashing on the dash?

no, it just started slipping. no lights or anything. i had to limp it home though, once it was moving it kept moving, just wouldnt change up unless i revved it. same in reverse. it started to whine breifly before it happened. i thought it might be low oil but it was full - and dark brown...! i looked at the flex plate, it was still in place but had 2 radial cracks in it rather than in bits in the bell housing. they weren't obvious at first but with a strong torch i could see them. its possibly the fact that it didnt break up which has caused damage over time to the gearbox. might be worth having another look at yours just in case.
