Are the TD5's any better than the 2/300tdi's? - It depends how you are going to measure them, to say which is best. The TD5 is without doubt a better overall road car, as good if not better offroad, but it is a different setup completely and takes a while to get used to.
Do they rust as badly as the tdi's? - Nowhere near as bad, almost none on the body and usually only surface rust on chassis.
Are they as temperamental? - Tdi's are generally not considored to be temperamental. TD5 is a much more complex vehicle overall. ABS is std, other systems us the ABS eg Hill descent, Traction Control etc. TD5 is generally much more electronic and poorly understood by garages, so it is essential to get your own diagnostic gear such as Nanocom, even if you don't plan to do the actual work you will be able to contribute to the diagnosis.
Quicker? - Definitely, especially when re-mapped which can be done for only about £250.
Disco II is a much more modern vehicle altogether, that is good and bad, but if you can adapt to new ways of thinking you will enjoy a TD5 - I currently have 2 plus 1x Tdi 300 and I always take the TD5's when out on a journey.
