Massive improvement in Td4 vibration since replacing the torque converter. But, in hills, with TC locked it is still present.
Took the prop off and no change.
Fitted a microphone to near each drive shaft and took it out with headphones on. Identified a rear wheel bearing, replaced bout a year ago, whining but no noticeable noise from front shafts when low freq vibration occurs.
When you test for rotation play there is about 2mm at the shaft. No play up and down.
Can these generate vibration without being loose?
I am suspecting the inner joint and may just change them but don't want to make matters worse with a poor quality replacement. GKN are hard to find.
Anyone found changing inner joint which had no play solved the vibration problem?
Engine mount is good and firm.
Worried that it may do gearbox or IRD bearing damage if left like this.
Anything else in the Jatco that can cause vibration when TC locked?

It's potentially possible that an inner CV is running off centre under load. This normally happens at low speeds while accelerating, shaking the who power unit, but I suppose it could happen at higher speeds too.

Hopefully the Jatco doesn't have an internal fault to a piston or something.
 
Whatever it is, all the time it is damped by the transmission fluid it is not noticeable. Then when the lock comes in it only shows up on hills under load.

It's the shafts or the gearbox.
Although last night I did wonder if the engine was causing it!!!
Covered all my bases now!!
 
No fault codes and no feeling of misfire but a general 'roughness' would transmit through a locked TC and not through an unlocked one it is true.
Might have to catch a video. Uphill, TC locked in 4th or 5th, vibration throughout entire car, I would say very low frequency, 100Hz ish. When the TC unlocks or a downshift and all smooth again.
Not sure it is worth the time to change the driveshafts. Does it with propshaft off so that eliminates all that stuff.
 
If the vibration is only there when the TC is locked, then it's not the CV joints, as it would still vibrate TC locked or not.
 
OK. Just wondered if the lack of TC lock could be providing some damping for a transmission problem.
It is odd. Engine doesn't drive like it is not healthy.
Microphones underneath revealed nothing.
Must be gearbox internals I guess in which case it can stay until it gets worse.
If there are any other ideas then happy to try and would be most welcome.

Spoiling a really good car and not sure what else to try. TC has been changed, new VCU and bearings. No play in any joints or shafts.
May be worth changing all the wheels and tyres??
Have a spare auto box but would love to confirm what is causing this before I undertake all the work involved.

It is unchanged. I do have a spare autobox to try when I have time. In the meanwhile it can be driven without the vibration by using the manual shift or booting it on hills for a change down. Purely when TC locked in 4th or 5th and on labouring hills.

Have you got any ideas?!?!
 
I would have said the driveshaft, but am not sure how many miles your one has on. Had mine changed in Jan/Feb for a none-original one and now got the noise back. It somehow sounds like the flush of a toilet sometimes. On mine it was and is mainly uphill as well or new downhill. If it cures it I could let you know on the 18th, but first need to get the long bolt thread fixed on the rear links. Couldn't get it out, unfortunately and get the bolt on again.
 
Could well be driveshafts. No play or wobble in either but they have done nearly 200k !

Please let me know if it cures the problem.
Must admit, mine doesn't sound like a toilet flushing!! It is a deep throbbing vibration which resonates through the whole car. Maybe your toilet sounds like that. :)
 
I agree with @mbrokof that a vibration under load sounds like a CV joint... Had something similar on our Citroen C5, was offside front driveshaft inner CV joint, but it was more like the "deep throbbing vibration which resonates through the whole car" that @andyfreelandy describes. Split the gators and eyeball the CVs - even popping the shafts out isn't that hard, especially if it saves you YOLO'ing it on a speculative gearbox change.

Doesn't appear all the time, though. It usuallly starts with the vibration, just like as if the power when accelerating wouldn't be transferred properly onto the road which was before that change as well.
