hi

just purchased a 02 freelander td4 and having some problems, here we go!

driving at 60-70 up a slight hill power seems to go and slow right down and she throws out a load of black smoke.

now she has started smoking most of the time when she is going up any hill. looked under the bonnet and there is a load of oil over the front of the engine!

any suggestions??

don't drive it any more until you have changed the crankcase breather filter or you WILL kill the engine.

the crankcase is pressurising because the filter is blocked, which is then forcing the dipstick up out of its tube and then you are getting oil being forced up the tube under pressure and all over the engine. once this has happened, the turbo is getting negligible oil and getting ready to fry.

from a main dealer, expect to pay no more than £30 for the filter, and takes about an hour to change if it's the first time you've done it and your not freelander savvy.

oh, and then you need to clean it up, and refill with oil to the correct level.

could also be a split intercooler hose, but unlikely to cause that much oil spillage. You would hear a sucking / hissing sound when accelerating if it was a split hose.

good luck

no problems at all. you have to remove the cover on the top of the engine (5 allen screws), and it will be sitting under a plastic cover on top of the engine, just in front of the injectors. the cover looks a bit like a syphon cover out of a toilet cistern.

you have to unclip some of the injector fuel return line to be able to access it.

sounds scary, but not too bad in reality.

the replacement is a cylindrical foam filter, and the kit comes with a rubber gasket too. also check the operation of the spring and valve whilst it's apart.

I'll see if I can find some links for you to help. Also, if you post your location (just roughly) there might be someone nearby that could come and help with this.

if you do a search for crankcase breather filter or similar you will find quite a few threads.

also if you search for RAVE CD, you will find a link to a website where you can download an instruction and workshop manual for your freelander which will help with all of this.

good luck, let us know if you need any more help.

to be honest, it's not a hard job. there's quite a bit of info on here about it, it's just a case of sifting through all the threads.

as for your location, bit far for me, living in kent. any help I can give through here, I will gladly. Only get a chance to come on here in the evenings as working during the day.

If you look at this link, you'll get the idea of what you are looking to change. All you will see with the engine cover off is the top of the big black plastic part. The filter is underneath:

Freelander TD4 and Range Rover TD6 Crankcase Breather on eBay (end time 26-Jan-10 15:11:00 GMT)

(I assume you have checked to see if the oil has come out of the dipstick tube?)

when i took the dip stick out it was coverd in oil. there are no other pipes off so i think it must have come out of there.
