Hi

Seems to be lots of poor cold starting TD4's here, but how about poor warm starting ?

Mine is OK at cold starts. Glow Plugs show for a few secs, turn the key, usually about 3-4 cranks and boom, no problem.

However, I note the opposite on a warm start. Lots of cranking and a limp start up, sometimes I have to try more than once.

Now, I've looked at the threads relating to Injectors and this seems a good place to start, but would that be the cause of poor warm starts ?

If it helps I get VERY good MPG and wondered if it might be a fuel pump problem. Perhaps too little fuel when warm ?? Just a guess

Thank you, I'll look at this and see if I can fix it myself. Is is a simple job of taking out the old sensor and replacing with a new one, based on it being accessable, or is it hidden away somewhere annoying ?

it's an easy straigtforward job just one bolt and an electrical connection.....

hmmm, I think it may well be the injectors now, as I purchased a new Cam Sensor from the local dealer (£100 with the VAT!) and swapped it..................... to be frank it's made no difference, so I conclude its not that which is the problem.

Shame really, as £100 to test something out is a waste.

I think I need to do the injector test and see what happens from there, but perhaps it will teach me to do low cost testing first next time.

My 03 TD4 was becoming more and more difficult to start when hot. Finally it wouldn't start at all for at least 30 minutes. Called the AA who diagnosed a HP fuel pump problem but advised me to get it plugged in to be certain of the fault. The diagnostic showed a faulty fuel pressure sensor. Changed this and bingo, starts first time hot or cold. It is the little gadget on the passenger side end of the fuel rail. Pull off the plug, unscrew it screw the new one in, reconnect the plug and away you go. Not cheap though, mine cost £148 from LR so shop around. The mech told me that the hot start problem is usually caused by either this or the cam shaft sensor which costs £90 so it's worth having the check done first.

Our warm/hot start turned out to be one injector with excessive leak back - this was most noticable after engine was turned off and left standing for 5 minutes or so before trying to start again. The leak back test looks the cheapest place to start without any diagnostics, else best left to a trusty garage perhaps.
