i looked under the landy and theres a large metal plate, would i have to take this off to get to it then??

Oil filter sits at the front of the engine between it & the radiator. It's a black plastic cylindrical unit with a 36mm nut moulded on the top for which you'll need a 36mm socket available from various motor factors. The filter itself is just a replaceable element which sits inside. You must use fully synthetic oil with this engine (it takes over 6 litres).
To access the drain plug you will need to get the undertray off which isn't fun. You will then be best to modify it like many here myself included have done for easier access in future. Plenty of info here, just do some searches.

ok thanks mate when you say modify do you mean just leave it off??

Can do, but it is good at keeping out road salt & general muck etc.
I carefully broke the plastic sheet portion off from the unwieldy carrier & made up a couple of brackets for the front section. Now I only have the two rear bolts & two large hex head self tappers at the front to undo & the plastic tray comes off leaving the rest of the framework in place. Some guy on here even fitted hinges on to the front so he just undoes the two rear bolts & it drops like a trapdoor. Others have drilled a large hole where the sump plug is so they don't have to undo anything for simple oil changes.

Pay attention with the "over 6 litres" please. My experience is that it is closer to 5-1/2 litres, my advice is to fill it up with 5 litres and then check it every 200 cl, it takes some time but it's easier than having to drain the overfilled oil. (The fact the garage charges you 6.8 litres doesn't mean it really needs it, first time in the garage they filled it up with the, in the book, indicated 6.8 litres and I had to drain over a liter).

Seems to depend on how well the oil is drained out especially from the oil cooler. Like you, my first change was about 5.5 litres. The next time, I got a friend of the family to do a couple of small things for the mot & asked him to do my oil & filter at the same time (lazy I know). I provided 2 tubs of oil & warned him about the book saying it needs around 6.5 litres but I'd only managed to do 5.5 litres on my oil change. He however found it needed all of 6.5 litres & we thought it was probably due to his facilities being better & getting it at the right level on his ramps whereas I've got to make do out in the street, & probably didn't have it right - I know it wasn't exactly level when I did it.

Might be, I'm thinking of leaving it drain all night long next time I do an oil change, will open the drain in the evening and leave it like that for the whole night. The car being on a flat horizontal surface. Curious to see the outcome of it then.

Let us know Will how that goes. I'm just going to have to do mine at the roadside again so will just have to make do. I am at least using fully synthetic oil & changing it well before it's due so it should be ok.

Undo the oil filter housing cap before you drain the oil as it will open the drain valve on the housing and allow the oil to drop into the sump

Land Rover recommend semi synthetic 5w-30 ford spec oil and BMW recommend fully synthetic BMW LL04 5w-30 oil

I normally start with undoing the drainplug and let the oil flow out whereafter I start with the other things such as opening the oil filter cap etc.. will try to remember to open this first, before anythign else. Maybe that might explain the roughly 1 liter difference ?? And re the oil, think I'll go for the fully synthetic, not that the car is much tortured or so (this week I passed the cap of 75.000 km in almost 10 years .....)
