I have a 2004 TD4 with 43,000 on the clock. recently I have noticed a knocking or thruming type noise when accelerating from low revs after I have started from cold. As the revs pick up the noise stops and once the engine is warm there is no noise at all even at low revs. Everything sounds find when ticking over or when reving in neutral. Does anyone out there have any ideas what this may be or if its something I should be worried about.

I also have an 04 td4 and I also get a sort of loud rattling noise when cold but after a couple of miles it goes away.

I think it could be the Glow Plugs. I am going to book it in for a service in a few weeks and have them changed at the same time, as when I start from cold and rev the engine when cold before I move off it sounds like it is missing and ejects a large puff of smoke.

Glow plugs will not cause the fault you describe. glow plugs are not even needed in this country on direct injection engines as it never gets cold enough.

The fault you have is caused by one or more of the injectors overfuelling. Get the fuelling compensation checked with T4 and you'll find one or more will be reading too high.
