Hi guys and gals,
Wondering if this is happening to anyone else, Whilst im braking im getting a grinding noise ,but not all the time, Ive checked the pads and theyve got lots of meat left on them , ive noticed that the disks have a lip on them could this be the reason why , Please help as its driving me insane. landy is a td4 03 kalahari.Cheers Carl.
 
Got the same problem as above with my FL. It got worse lately. But I knew I got enough meat on mine. Took 'm off anyway. No grit and discs look fine. Pads are shiny though. Is that normal ? Or could this be cheap pads ? Apec is says. Is that the make ?

I am gonna change them anyway, but anything else I should look at before I try again?
 
Have you checked all of them? I've found that if one is sticking, only one pad degrades and start making a noise.

It can't be the rear brake shoes can it ? They are only used by the handbrake, right ?

I guess it could. If they're worn through, it'll make the same noise as metal grinds on metal. I would check them out if I were you. The rear brakes are used the same as the front brakes, not only by the handbrake...
 
Was getting late and decided to put my old pads back in. Cleaned them (and the rest) with a wire brush, as mentioned in the Haynes Manual. Also sanded the rusty disc edges.

Result was good. :clap2: Especially after a few times hard braking. Seems that a lot of crap could have been the problem. We'll see if it holds.

Will look at rear shoes soon anyway.
 
Since they had to get rid of asbestos in disc pads, the discs themselves have become something of a wear item, and generally you could expect to renew them every other change of pads. If you've got a substantial wear lip on your discs, take a moment to check they haven't worn below their tolerance.
 
If the discs are not worn below limit you can always take a grinder to the lip and smooth it off before fitting new pads
(motoring on a budget)
 
Mintex pads & discs cost me around £60 delivered so it wasn't worth faffing about with sanding them.
Once had a BMW 525ix the four wheel drive one which had unique discs. They were wel over £100 for discs alone so I used some sanding discs in an angle grinder to take off the ridge & clean up the discs. I measured to make sure they were well above minimum thickness which they were & fitted mintex pads. Results were brilliant, better than I had hoped for though it took a good hour to clean them up carefully & properly.

Not worth it for the Landy though unless moneys really tight.
