Hi,

I have a few more questions from you good people! I've looked at tax exemption and I found that someone had written the following below.

--------------
Facts are,
There are a possible total of 14 points for tax exemption. You have to retain 8 points to continue claiming tax exemption (Historic Status).

1 Point for the engine.
5 Points for the chassis.
2 Points for the transmission.
2 Points for the steering assembly.
2 Points for the suspension
2 Points for the axles.
= 14 Points in total.
---------------

Is this still true? Now a few questions.....

1) I gather a galvanised chassis is okay for retaining points. I've seen 3quarter and 1ton chassis's, what's the difference? And will either still be okay?

2) I have a 1972 109, this I think should have a 2.25 according to the log book - though at the moment it has a 6cyl 2.6. I'm not sure on years, should this be a 3 bearing engine? And if so, would putting in a 5 bearing engine affect the points?

3) If I had a defender bulkhead with a single piece windscreen, would this effect the points? And how difficult would it be to fit? Brand new bulkheads can be purchased cheaply for defenders, and even galvanised ones are possible...... the same can't be said for series landys unless someone can point me in the right direction?

4) How difficult/simple is it to put defender axles onto a series chassis? And connect brakes?

5) Would salisbury axles be classed as not original?

5) This is how I would like to build, does this seem okay to you guys? I would like to make a landrover for me to keep for life, so this is how I would like to build it, would this still make it okay with registration and tax exemption etc.

Galvanised chassis (series retaining leafsprung suspension), 2.25 engine and transmission, standard steering, maybe defender axles, maybe series - all depends how difficult easy it is..... as per 4. As I'm looking at a vehicle to keep forever, I would also like a galvanised bulkhead. There seem to be galvanised defender bulkheads around, and non galvanised ones cheaply. Series galvanised bulkheads..... not really around as you're all aware. I love the simplicity of series landys, no ecus, no power steering, no complicated modern things. I do though love the look of defender landys.

So........ what do you think? I'm expecting help, ridicule, disgust, advice and intrigue in replies..... but hopefully there will be replies....

Thanks yet again!

Daniel

Some thing is classed as orrignal if it was orrignally fitted to the motor when it left the factory.

Is your landy in such a state that you would need to replace the Chassis, Bulkhead and Axles. If so its gona be a compleatley different motor.

Or do you just want it to last forever, if this is the case i would get a big tin of hammerright and pleanty of waxoil then set to work!

if you swap like for like then it remains the same, there are no restrictions on the bulkhead and body panels so thats ok. just swapping the original chassis for a direct replacement like a galv hassis has no bearing on tax exempt. you lose one point for the engine swap. the defender axles are coil sprung so you will lose 6 points for the axle( 2 for the axle, 2 for the suspension, 2 for the transmission,ie diff)put salisburys on it and dont declare it, its easier. hope this helps ;)

Hammerite wouldn't help this landy.....

In which case I'll scrap idea 4 then.... I didn't realise suspension issues.... I've never had a defender, and forgot about transmission. That would have caused problems anyway, it's just i always see cheap alloys but steel wheels will do fine!!

I guess regardless of 3 or 5 bearing engine or salisbury axles, if they're happy with galvanised chassis, transmission, suspension, steering assembly, then I shouldn't get any problems with DVLA?

Is there anything that would make them inspect my vehicle when it's done, not that hopefully I'll have anything to worry about? i.e if I do what I'm supposed to and change engine numbers and body colour on the log book will that make them take an interest in me? I just like a hassle free life........ Well, once it's finished and I die with it....... If I have the intention of keeping it forever, then I won't cry so much when I work out how much I'm spending...... lol

I'll also be keeping my eyes open for a cheap lpg system....... :)

Anyone else got any input in any of the above?

check on your v5, mine hasnt got an engine number printed on it, it just says 2.25 petrol . changing the body colour will just be a simple fill in the v5 and send it off. if you swap the axles for salisbury, dont tell them, just say they are original if ever you get asked.

Interesting...... I'll have to try and find my V5 and check...... now where's that mountain of paperwork.....

I now need to find the whole body for a 110 county......... Though, does anyone know where I can get new body panels for a 109 safari? Someone has cured the rust problems in one of the c posts..... by filling it with concrete.... lol..... Though If I can find a cheap enough 110 county, I'll take the body and sell the rest.... and hope I don't lose too much money... Sooo many options....... All fun and games!!

get a cheap enough one, and you should at least break even, selling the parts off.
and then get the body for nowt.
