Hi all,
My discovery 300tdi auto starter out with a little tap but over the last couple of weeks its got worse.
I did an oil change recently thinking it may just need a service but no change.
I've read a couple of threads leading ro the vaccum pump so i got one today and im going to fit it tjis weekend hopefully if the weather holds out
But........
After opening the bonnet today there's loads of rusty coloured water all the top of the engine but mainly at the front on the aux belt tensioner and water pump could the tapping be causes by a faulty water pump leading to it leaking or is this a separate problem all together??
Landys..... its a love hate relationship lol

Yeah it would, take the belt off and give it a wiggle, it shouldn't wobble at all, if the noise goes away when the belt is off and it's run it's most likely that, has it been getting warm ? Running low on water ?

No the temperature always sits in the middle and hasn't run low in water until I noticed the rusty colored water today. I'll slip the belt off tomorrow and have a look I'll keep you updated cheers for the help much appreciated

Hmmm it may be on its way out and not leaking yet, the tappets could need adjusting, but my bet ATm is pump seeing as there's water everywhere

Quick update. Ive had the rocker cover off today to check the tappets and tappets 4 and 5 there was about 20mm gap! So thats the tapping sorted now for the whine but like 200tdi ayre said about the water pump. 1 on its way so we shall see if that stops it. Thanks again

why the 20mm gap ?youd have to have bent push rods for a gap that size

20mm is over 3/4 inch in old money, surely you cant have a wild guess and be that far out! If it is/was anything like 20mm (or even 5mm) you need to find out why otherwise you have probably got trouble brewing. Also make sure valve stem caps are still in place and not pushed through / dislodged as that will increase your clearances.

I'm not even going to suggest you ask your missus to show you what 3/4 inch looks like as you may get a shock :D:D

Im pretty sure there was a decent size gap on the tappets but like I said it was a guess but there is a noticeable difference on the 4th and 5th tappets.
I'll whip rocker cover off this weekend and have another look at the valve stem seals. If the valve stem seals had failed it would smoke on idle and run lumpy on idle wouldn't it?

Valve stem caps not seals, they are on the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm pushes on them. On my mobile just now so limited functionality but try search for valve caps and you will see what I mean
