Noticed today that my tappets are rattling a little bit so thought I would adjust them up, had a look in Haynes book of lies but there is no mention of which thickness feeler gauge to use, does anyone know?

I've got a new rocker gasket to fit at the same time, any other tips/advice?

Cheers, Harry

Had to do this in an emergency once. It's near as makes no difference the same thickness as a strongbow can :-D

Cheers guys, looks like I need some metric feeler gauges, only got imperial ones!

Strongbow  I did use a John Smiths can a few years back in a similar emergency!

Might be worth checking if the valve caps are not worn out
You might have to take rocker shaft out to look properly

I dug out my imperial gauges the other day and it seems like they have got a tad damp and starting to orange in places, if I was to rub them with wire wool would that drastically change their thicknesses?

Valve caps should all be ok, they were new about a year ago -timing belt snapped :(

I've got to replace my rocker cover gasket soon and thought I might as well check the tappers while I've got the cover off. Is it routine to replace the caps at the same time?

I use 8 to 12 mm on my 300tdi, but check first that the rocker bar studs have not come loose like mine did. If this is so, I cured this by removing the studs completely, cleaning everything with carb cleaner & refitting studs upside down using locktite, as the threads in the head will have become weak, and are better the deeper they go. You will have to meddle a bit with washers to get a good fit for the tappet cover, as the short threads are now to the top, but it cured mine permanently. Before, I had been adjusting my tappets often, only to hear the bloody things a short while later (again). Then the rail broke because of the loose studs, and after limping back to base, did the above & no problems since.

Cheers guys, I will have a crack this week and let you know how it goes :)

In the end I bought some metric gauges due to the condition of my imperial ones
