My V8 has twin SU carbs, at the moment the spill offs at the front spill into the nearside front wheel well. Should they go back to the fuel tank?

I haven't any direct experience, being a diesel owner, but if for no other reason than your wasting fuel and greatly increasing the risk of a vehicle fire I reckon it should!

Some one on here (dont know if it was you) had just converted a diesel to a carb petrol v8 and was having trouble with it over fueling. He found that the overflow should go to the floor as when the overflows were hooked up back to the tank via the old diesel return pipe it would not run.

I hope this helps

SU carbs use the overflow purely as an emergency measure to direct any excess away from the hot engine they also serve as air bleeders when the float chambers fill,if you have any fuel coming out of these pipes it means the float chambers are FLOODING usually the needles are worn and need replacing allways do this in pairs for twin carbs. i have come across carbs flooding with sympathetic engine vibration ,the frequency harmonises with the carbs and tends to hold the needle of the seat flooding the carbs resetting the carbs or the tickover upsets the vibes and all is ok again......dave

as far as routing them back to the tank goes this wont work, they need to be vented to the open air as any back pressure will prevent the chambers from working properly ;ie the needles from cutting the fuel flow off.....put a lemonade bottle on the tap seal the join try filling it you will only get so much in then back pressure will stop any more water getting in ,same as your float chambers ,that why they are vented to the open air my friend.....hope this helps....dave
