Evening

Been fannying about with my 3.5v8 disco this afternoon trying to get the thermo choke to work and get it starting right in the cold
Before i stick it in my defender.

All i managed to do is make me want to take a hatchet to it !

Then i came in an read about them - supposed to be crap.

Given the choice would you just swap over to a manual choke ?

I have a set on another 3.5v8 engine . It is a lower bhp 1980s defender engine - can i straght swap the carb or would i be better just stripping the manual choke off and fitting it to the disco

If the carbs are the same (HIF) then just swap the needles over and you are good to go.
Jet sizes will be the same they just put different needles in for various applications.:)

Yep followed your advice and in the process answered my own question.

Castings are different , both hif carbs but no way to fit the manual choke where the solex was

Got the rebuilt manual choked carbs from the 110 running the needles from the disco v8 ready to be refitted to the disco and tested on sunday. Fingers crossed that makes a difference as its a bitch to start from cold and keeps flooding at the moment.

Aberdeen ......

Im new to petrol engines - always had diesel in the past so so wouldnt mind doing some reading. And im young enough that my experiance of carbs comes from lawnmowers not cars :)

Even a link to a manual to buy would be good , ive seen the weber ones from the book of lies people but nowt for su's but im probably being blind :)

Same principle, check float level, needle valve (fuel) etc

If you put your needles in new carbs then it'll be fueled the same.

I have manuals but you're too far away.

Rain rain go away so i can get my carbs fitted again !

- unless someone has scuba gear i can borrow ? - rediculous 2 landys with 3 engines between them and none of them can pull their sorry arsesminto the garage for me to work on them in the dry haha

Carbs in

She fired up first turn - so much better than the solex

Unfortunantly its a v1 or v2 at best

Ill pull the plugs leads dizzy and coil out 1 x 1 and inspect tomorrow

My moneys on the plugs being corroded or the dizzy being damp - been sat for 3 months
