Sorry, I know its a numpty question, but what exactly is diff lock and what is it FOR???

I never use low ratio or diff lock, I drive on mud and crap frequently and have been known to rescue other (foreign) 4x4's that have got stuck on more than one occasion.

Am I missing something here? I have very old LR 90 TD (1988). Do you think it might have magic powers? (Serious question by the way, I don't understand what it means/is for and Google didn't give me any answers)
 
diff lock is in the gearbox/transferbox it makes sure at least 1 wheel on each axle is turning
 
Thank you buckshot, not that I feel any wiser after your answer. What sort of conditions would you need to justify switching on the Diff Lock,?
 
You prob will never need to use it by the sound of things you have managed ok with normal 4 wheel drive, guess if you got into some bad mud you may want to try it.

You have perminant 4 wheel drive.Thats good.Jap motors usually dont, they have selectable.Low ratio is a second gear box, if you use it you will have a reduced road speed but effectively use all the engines power for torque.Very useful for towing or offroading.Also useful engine breaking for desending hills.Diff lock is used (preferably) before your wheels slip, to roatate all wheels at the same speed, although this isnt always the case as anyone cross axled will tell you

its a hard question that, some people use it more than others
i use it if i think its going to be touch and go or if i know is a bit hardcore
when it is not engaged technicly you could just have 1 wheel on 1 of your axles spinning and the other 3 will do fook all
 
Difflock locks both the front and rear propshafts so that they turn at the same speed and share the drive from the engine equally. it is still possible to spin your wheels as there are no difflocks on the axles but it is much less likely to happen and in the event the rear wheels spin the front ones will still have traction or viceversa. It should be used whenever there is a likelyhood of spinning your wheels or losing traction eg on snow & ice or wet grass & sand. contrary to popular belief it is still possible to spin all 4 wheels if the ground you are driving on is loose or slippery enough.
