While changing the rear bearings on my defender, I had an axle stick in place so that the spring steel clip could not be attached as the axle was to far in. After searching the web various suggestions were offered. I tried slide hammer and attaching a ratcheting tie-down strap. Neither worked. Left it in the shop in frustration. My mate came to help me next day as two heads are better than one.
Solution, 1) drill and tap axle, 2) drill a small piece of bar stock to fit against drive member, 3) fit three bolts through the drive member and attach nuts to backside, 4) hold nuts with box end and turn bolt heads in a sequence to exert near equal force on brake drum.
In the time it took to turn each bolt a turn at a time, it broke free and came out.

So do you mean the half shaft was stuck ? Or was the axle drive member that was stuck?
If the half shaft was stuck it could because it has developed a slight twist where it enters the diff. Looks like your drive member was fixed on with something sticky.

from me its a well done, I love the way people adapt a difficult situation and make a mod! I once struggled to remove a gearbox on a Volvo 244 as the spigot bearing had seized! we tried allsorts to get the bugger loose - scrapped the car in the end!

I had a landy axle with a stuck halfshaft,in the end chained axle to a stanchion and pulled the half shaft with a tractor, still did not come out so scraped the axle.
Later I cut it open just to see and half shaft was twisted like a candy stick!!! And the end had welded its self into the diff.
