Hi,
I am new to the site and have a request for some info. I have a 1999 Freelander 2.0 XE di.

When the engine is warm, it smells very strongly of oil/diesel. It still smells when it is cold but not as strongly.

You can smell it from about 5 paces away. I have only recently bought the car, and thought it might just need a service. Just had it serviced - still smells!

Any thoughts/cures welcomed.

Matt

Try taking the engine cover off and check for leaks in the injector or leakback pipes or connections. Also check the low pressure pump and fuel filter pipe connections, as the O rings can fail.

Hurrah!!!!! Just took off belly tray and sump is covered in oil.....
Just paid £500 to have another oil leak fixed where the gearbox had to be dropped out, can't believe the mechanic missed this one as well. Think I will just give the car to Dakar and let them do a diagnostic check on it.

Doubt it. The oil leak was at the back of the engine, between the gearbox and the engine itself so the gearbox had to be dropped. Can't see how the sump would have got a leak, as he wouln't of gone near it.
