Well, I have an odd (to me, anyway!) little problem which I hope someone can advise me on.

Bought an early 90 recently, fitted with an early (74/75 ish) Rangie V8 and gearbox. Long story short, it doesn't run very well so I decided the best course of action was a full rebuild of the Stromberg 175 carbs. Ordered a kit from Southern Carbs, along with new needles, and set about pulling them apart today.

Aside from a few other woes (how the hell do you get the main jet out? Brute force seems the wrong, but only, option??) I discovered something rather odd.

Having removed both the pistons, whilst they look identical apart from one is a darker-coloured metal than the other, one is TWICE the weight of the other! This is the piston on it's own, with the needle, diaphragm, spring, oil etc removed. One weighs approx 120g, the other 230g! No wonder the car didn't want to run smoothly.

Other than looking for a scrap pair of carbs and hoping I can get two similar-weight pistons out of the 4 I would end up with has anyone got any other suggestions on how to address this? I'm tempted to get the Dremel out and relieve metal off the inside of the heavy piston until they weigh the same, but I don't know whether I'll be able to remove enough, or what other effect that might have.

Failing that, anyone got any scrap 175s kicking around?

Thanks.
