Yes, prob spelt it wrong...done 300 miles in my v8 88" before the problems started..

Driving down motorway, engine starts to cough, fart and lose power..if i take foot off accelerator and then gas her up, seems to get going again. sits fine in tick over..

Does 10 miles fine, then same prob, speed drops to 30mph on motorway...this continues for an hour..and I am so stressed..darent stop...dark and cold on hard shoulder is no fun

Today been out and one carb pot was very low on oil, the other ok...topped both up with 3 in 1 oil....seems to be ok, runs sweet again..

Question is, as i have never had a v8 before..after approx how many miles does the oil in the stromberg pots need filling up? Is it likely that that was the problem yesterday?

Now i'm not taking chance with it 2mrw, going to trailer it to from warwick to harwich as i HAVE to get the boat home...so any ideas for when i get home greatly appreciated...

Could be carb iceing, it doesn't have to be freezing outside for it to happen. Next time it does it, if it's safe to do so, pull up and stop the engine for ten minutes, if it is carb iceing the heat from the engine rising will thaw the carbs out. After ten minutes start up and drive off, if it runs ok that may well be the problem.
Good luck.

i have only know v8 carbs to freeze up overnite when running the under bonnet tranient heat will never allow them to freeze in uk wheather conditions.
i think you need to remove the 4 screws on the tops of the carbs and remove the piton chamber and check the rubber diaphrams first replace as pairs
could be you also need the carbs setting up and balancing and the linkages fixing correctly
would also advise replacing the fuel filter and possible the pump as it sounds like a fuel supply problem

Agree its a fuel prob..strange one..seems fine now after ive topped up the oil in the carbs, one was dry!!....took it for a run and its purring again...

Just to be a fly in the ointment, I can assure you that one dash pot being short of oil would not cause the running problems you have encountered. The oil in the dash pot acts as a damper to smoothe out piston movement.

Don't know about Strombergs, but I had similar symptoms with SU carbs on a Daimler V8. Turned out to be a sticking float.
