Well when I first purchased my 2001 DHSE she was doing 15 MPG.

Since then I have performed a full oil service, new Intercooler, new Turbo hoses. New MAF device and reattached Map sensor pipe.

I removed old Cold start device coz was not sure it was shutting down correctly. I had the ECU rechipped. New EGR solenoid.

I now get 27 on motorway runs, still not great but getting there. Power is a lot better when I push the foot down.

No smoke out back.

So as discussed, in another thread I need to change Crank Speed sensor (coz Hawkeye says it's faulty) , although it does seem to be working.

I wondered if there was any thing else I could do (bare in mind I am learning as I go). Thanks.

Ps. Get a bit of a headache when I drive, suspect I have an exhaust leak, would this effect anything, I know I probably need to get the gasket checked.

27mpg is about as good as it gets unless you stick to 50mph and you have a very light foot, if it's chipped the dash figure may well be wrong.
I got an improvement when I fitted a new SS cat back exhaust system.
CPS is not faulty if it's running that well, I would suspect Hawkeye.
You would be better off if you had not replaced the EGR solenoid. Take the pipe from the solenoid to the EGR valve off to disable it. It will stop the manifold filling with crap and help maintain good performance.
 
Thanks Datatek, will try disconnecting the EGR solenoid. I need to check this exhaust leak issue, as I say get a banging headache on a long run. Any place to look?

No. do not disconnect the solenoid, just pull the vacuum pipe where it goes to the EGR valve. You can always put it back for the MOT.
 
I get 15mpg round town in winter and 25mpg on a run in summer I get 19mpg to 21mpg around town and 27mpg to 30mpg on a good run at 60mph mine is standard and pre egr
 
I don't trust the dash display as it says I get 21 around town and 23 motorway after 200 miles doing 70 the whole way. Seems unlikely to me.
 
I do the brim to brim check each month and my guage is only 0.4mpg out
My dash read out has shown 30.2 average for last couple of months but the brim to brim figure has been 26 mpg just! It will no doubt start to drop now its getting colder and be down to its 22.5 mpg brim to brim figure by dec/jan and thats mainly town driving with 26 to 27 shown on the dash.

Also depends a lot on your fuel, try adding in small amounts of petrol especially in winter.

running on Bio you can increase the MPG further and reduce your fuel cost per litre too! Running on SVO (straight Veg Oil) you can see your MPG drop slightly (1 to 3 mpg) but then as this is half the price as Dino Diesel it’s a small price to pay. By far the most calorific and thus giving the highest MPG is of course Black diesel (Waste engine oil and other things mixed) however, this is NOT a bio fuel and you will have to pay fuel duty before you can use it! but expect an increase of around 20%

Never heard of one where the dash reading is lower than brim to brim and if a power box is fitted or a chip it can wildly over read.
I log mileage and every tank of fuel which I always brim, the average over 4 years is smidgin over 24mpg, pretty good for a 2.25 tonne 4WD automatic barn door IMO.

I hear you! Disconnected the EGR vacuum hose, seems smoother somehow but that could be me.

Disconnect the EGR pipe and inlet, clean the inlet mine looked like this

now it's all clean you simply place a penny between this and the EGR pipe you removed to get it off. This bloacks off te EGR and prevents this gunking up in the future ;)
 
Wise words, thanks. If I remove and clean this, do I need a new gasket?

Where does the penny go? Is that necessary now I have pulled the pipe of between it and the EGR solenoid?

No need for a penny or any other means of blocking the EGR, with the vac pipe removed the EGR valve is permanently closed.
Cleaning it out is a good idea though.
