Police struggle to find anything to follow up. Often there's nothing at the crime scene as evidence. If there's no cctv they're stuck. All they have to rely on is witnesses and anpr camera's. Often there's no witnesses. If the plates are changed/hidden then there's nothing to link to. It does tell them the general direction of travel but only on major roads.

Well admittedly it probably has details changed, anyone seeing a gray defender 110 moving in the early hours is more like to remember than no colour, reg or type unlikely that they'd hang around to change plates while on someone's drive. Hope it has a working tracker on it.
 
They will change the plates later on if they want to hide it's identity to drive it some distance, or to park it up to see if it attracts attention like having a tracker fitted.
