damn damn damn got a bit of a fuelage leakage coming from the throttle body on my IIA which will explain the very bad fuel consuption (bout 120 miles on a tank full). The fuel qill squirt out from the throttle spindle either when the enigine sin't running or when decellerating. Now is this a job which requires a fix or a replacement carb??? i think the throttle body is worn more than the spinlde sadly. if i need new. do i replace like for like or put on a weber or similar for a few quid more???????????????

am not sure abart this but i think you can get a sleeve to fit in the body if the spindle is ok...i may have a carb fer sale in the next couple of weeks if me replacment manifold gets here..

of course yo could always get yer local injunearing place to make one fer you. sleeve that is not a carbatooter..or wait till boney faggot gets back and he'll tell you how to make one from a piece of brake pipe and some tallow

well - no , i spose yu got a point there, but there are prone to spitting back and catching fire - used to be a prob with cortina mk1's and it still is with Webber carbed GT40's.

well that was a waste of time and money. Carb rebuild kit. and now not only does **** **** out with fuel but also the spindle sticks and won't shut off. Great. new carb it is then

it will if it catches fire (they are prone to that)

Don't say that Daft, I got two of the little beggars!

I'm sure they did it to Cortinas' cuz they deserved it............Ran an SU on me Shovelhead fer years with no prob, the standard carb' wuz the one that burned a hole in me filter...........an' me knee.

Hi. I replaced my old carb on my IIA with a Weber a number of years ago. Didn't seem to give any more in terms of fuel consumption but it ran pretty good. The only thing was that the choke was "over choking" the damn thing and wouldn't start when cold. That is to say it needed choke but when I used choke it wouldn't friggin start. I drilled a couple of holes in the choke flap and this cured it. I also fitted a conventional car air filter that I could move the air intake towards the exhaust manifold in winter and this worked a treat too.

so a weber it is then??? the fuel consumption is down really really low with the zenith. bout 50 miles from half a tank

notice the plate (albeit plexiglass) on the bottom pic.
Here are a couple of comments about the problems that can occur and the reason for the "turkey pan" (cold air box). By drawing only outside air into the trumpets, you get a major boost in horsepower. ....

" I seem to recall the "baffle" had a number of functions... It stopped unburnt fuel from spraying onto the rear window, it retarded flames in the event of spitting, and, perhaps most importantly, it prevented mechanics from dropping little bits an pieces down the trumpets."

Also deflected flames from any backfire action to not torch the window and any of the aforementioned spit-up gas.

The cold box or turkey pan prevents exhaust manifold convected hot air and drive train dust getting to the venturies.
This also prevents raw fuel spitting down and landing on hot exhaust headers and starting fires.

that a better explanation, Marcus?
