I have been noticing recently that my stering is getting looser than it was. With the engin off I can sometimes move the steering wheel about a quater turn and back with out any resistance.

I had a look under the car and turned steering colum in the same way and the movement seems to be in the box.

There happens to be a V8 disco of a similar age at the local scrappy, is it worth getting that one off or going out and getting a new/recon one?

Any ideas?

Thanks

the steering box might need adjusting this is done from the top of the steering box, or you could have a worn joint or knukle

It should only be tested and adjusted with the engine running, without the pump supplying the oil pressure, you will feel lots more movement, more of a fail-safe to allow you to control vehicle in the event of a total pump failure.
