I'm looking at fitting a smaller steering wheel than the standard one but I've been given conflicting information so any help appreciated please

Firstly I've been told my car is a 300 so a rover 100 wheel will fit...then I'm told it won't fit.

Then I was told because it's a 300 it Will have 48 spline...until tonight, when I was told 29 spline.

It's a 1996 N reg 2.5 tdi with a "serpent belt not a V belt"...something else I was told

Can anyone actually tell me what I actually have and what steering wheel / boss I need please?

Of no consequence but what makes you want a smaller one?

A little more info on the car would help, I’ve never come across a 3.5tdi although I’m fairly new to land rovers, from what you’re saying if it’s a 96 Discovery 1 they presumably mean it’s a 300tdi engine and therefore a 2.5 rather than a 3.5.

I need a smaller wheel to give me more room. I'm a big bloke and the seat doesn't go back quite far enough so I thought I'd try smaller steering wheel first

The car isn't a 3.5tdi..It's a 2.5tdi but I was told it's a 300 as opposed to a 200 engine (and that makes a difference apparently)

I'm new to the discovery, land rover and 4wd thing in general so I'm only going on what I've been told...I only fetched the car on Sunday so still learning

PS...edited the original post now to say 2.5'..oops

Some aftermarket steering wheels with boss will protrude more than a standard wheel mate
It's the diameter that's causing problems.Tbh.
I could do with the seat dropping so the bottom of the wheel doesn't rub on my gut (ideally I need to lose weight but that's not going to happen quite enough lol)
Did any seats come with a height adjustment as I know in some cars the higher spec ones did.
It doesn't help being 6ft 3 in either

I'm not familiar with the rules in Britain, but, you need to check if it is legal to change the steering wheel, it could effect the roadworthy status and therefore effect your insurability as well. This is most particularly the case if the Disco has SRS airbags.

It's quite legal, and luckily I don't have airbags.

Look at the MoMo range, I run one and they're a fair bit smaller. can get them for about £150 new.

Is that on your Defender?
Thanks.
Just got to work out how many spline I need now

If you want to do this, get a copy of rave or if desperate a haynes manual and read how to remove the steering wheel. Then do it and count the splines. Where is the horn on D1? Also you would be able to see what else may be required , Horn, adaptors etc.

Cheers

Horn is in the center of the wheel.

Unfortunately, due to disability I have to get someone else to do the work so hopefully they'll know what they're doing

What's Rave ?

Could try a wheel off a mini metro, that's a Rover 100 before it was a Rover 100
I've read something about the metro wheel not fitting as they changed it when it became the 100
Looks like a boss and momo to be honest as those are guaranteed to fit once I know how many splines I have.
I don't want to end up buying loads of wheels just to see what fits

yeah the idea was to get one from a metro not a rover 100,
I really don't know what to do for the best. I've had that much conflicting information
Apart from fitting a separate boss and aftermarket wheel such as a momo one.
Failing that, remove the seat and sit on the floor as that'll give me more room hahaha

Just a quick question, where did you see a Momo was guaranteed to fit? just asking.

Cheers
By buying a boss which I've been sent a link to and then bolting a momo (or similar) wheel to it
For example...this boss
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/171436601606
And this wheel (not momo but similar)
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/401152124668

I know it's a 29 spline boss but they also do 48 spline too

I just wanted to avoid the aftermarket look if possible hence, asking about rover 100 or other rover ones

Just looked at an old thread, saying Morris Ital wheel, love the search box for "Discovery steering wheel"
I havemy found that one. I only found the rover one.

I just read that I need to remove my wheel and count / measure as they used different columns over the range so nobody knows without checking what fitment it is

I should have stuck with VW.. was easy on them to change things
