I have a very shaky front drive train at 80 mph and over. under that speed is totally smooth.

The front wheels have only done around 6k and theyve been balanced twice, steering alignment is correct, lower ball joints replaced 6ks ago and it improved reasonably, but still quite a lot of vibration. Ive noticed maybe the steering box may be slightly loose as i can wiggle my steering wheel at 80mph around maybe 5-10 degrees and nothing happens but still, when i get around to tightening it, i dont think it has anything to do with vibration does it?.

could it have to do with something else like the front diff, uj's or propshafts?

i must say that the speed limit here in spain is 80mph, i feel sorry if you are offended by my speed but i dont appreciate that kind of sarcasm when im worrying about my safety, i dont want to cause a hassle here, but i would like some respect even if i am a junior member here.

that said, in relation to the topic of this thread, i also had a new steering damper fitted, so theres a lot of things ruled out and i dont know what i should do, still ill give a go at the steerong box see if that helps.

check your uj's on the steering column if you are getting that sort of play at the steering wheel. What are your uj's like on the front driveshafts?

if yer that worried abart yo safety me old fruit, yo dunt want be wigglin yo steerin wheel at around the 80mph mark!

steerin box is a strong possibility. unlikely diffs n props imo.

i will take a peek at the ujs tomorrow morning as its pouring with rain now. ill tell you about all the ujs (propshaft and steering) when i get the chance tomorrow. if i have the chance ill do the steering box as well si if that sorts it out. also ive read about swivel pin preload, could someone explain what the swivel pin is, my mechanical terms in english are somewhat limited. thanks for your help.

the p38`s dont have swivel pins mate yours has ball joints which as you say have been replaced , i think you are getting confused by the classics which do have them .
rick.

I had a similar problem on mine, If I can remmeber correctly it was the front prop Uj's

Vibration at 50-60+mph is commonly attributed to REAR wheels being out of balance. I'd get them checked first or everything else will be pointless if they're out of balance.

well after a while, i write back after ive cheked nearly everything, steering box adjustment, front prop ujs, steering ujs, and as said steering damper and balljoints changed.

What are the chances of a dodgy bearing, the other day i was feeling sensitive and it felt like it was only coming from the left wheel.

if it is a bearing, could it have dirt? any other ideas?

steering box made it handle better but still get vibration
