I want to replace the steering rod on my '69 2A. I might be wrong when I say "steering rod" - I'm talking about the rod between the steering drop arm and the top of the steering relay unit.

Is there a way to replace this rod without removing both the drop arm and the top lever on the relay? The drop arm needs a pulling tool by the looks of it, and although I've removed the pinch bolt from the upper relay lever, I'm buggered if I can get a hammer or lever at it to pop it off.

Any advice much appreciated guys.
 
Are you refering to the link arm from steering box to relay ? Sometimes require a wedge tapped in to open up where they fit on the splines. They can be an absolute bugger to shift.....

Last call - Has anyone had this link arm out before without removing the drop arm and upper relay lever? Before I get too stuck into getting them off.. :)
 
Is it not possible to get in there with a ball joint splitter to pop the rod off leaving the arms in place?
 
Maybe.. but then I couldn't refit the new assembly with the arms in place? It looks to me like there's no position of either arm that will allow me to get the balljoints clear (or a new one back in if I separate the old ones as you say).. but there's a lot of experience on these forums so for all I know someone knows a trick ;)
 
I think you can get to the drop arm end through the wheel arch with the steering at full lock. You may have to take the mud shield off, I can't rememeber.
 
With the bolt removed from relay top arm what happens when you rock the steering wheel . Invariably on my landrover if the bolt holding the arm to relay is not fully tightened the arm comes loose.
