I've got a bit of a puzzle here, have a R-reg P-38 4.0se that had developed an alarming steering wander. I had already replaced shocks and steering damper so local LR specialist had a look and diagnosed suspension bushes, replaced these, better but still not cured .Garage now thinks steering box ,although no ovious excessive play. Steering box replaced with re-con box, now turns left but not right, "thinks", replacement box faulty. Second replacement box fitted, still turns easily to the left but unwilling to turn right. Both myself and garage staff now scratching heads in disbelief and wondering what to do next. Any ideas, are we missing something basic here, any thoughts at all welcome?

When you say unwilling to turn right do you actually mean it just wont go right or you have to really force it right?? When they fitted the new steering box did they centralise it as described in the workshop manual??

I dont really know that much about the steering system so I have just had a look through the workshop manual to see the full operation of it - the above question is just a sort of guess at what could be wrong :D

With the car on jacks it turns really easily to the left but you have to really apply a lot of force to get it to turn to the right.

Ok, if it were me, get the vehicle back up on stands or a ramp/whatever, disconnect the steering drop arm (the arm from the steering box) from the rest of the steering system and then just manually grab hold of a front wheel and try turning it both left and right?? Is this what you have already done?? This should tell you whether its the steering box or whether the problem is somewhere else??

Again this is just guesswork from reading the manual and trying to apply a bit of my own logic to it :D

Finally got this problem sorted, can you believe we got sent two faulty steering boxes from the reconditioners? , third one was fine, but I can tell you we were certainly scratching our heads for a while.
