Last project was clutch fork which took 25 hours.

Today I went to change the drop arm, got the ball joint end off no problem.

Used 10 ton hydraulic 2 leg puller on the splined side and nothing.

Very strange! Here goes another 25 hours? lol

Any advice welcome.

In the meantime I have put it back together and I am off to change diff,tbox,gbox, and engine oil, and filters all round.

Oh and strip the handbrake apart and grease up as feels like UJ's are gone but they arent, so handbrake must be dragging.

Well known Defender problem they can be very tight.As a complete replacement arm is available for about 22 beer tokens, grinding most of the way through the arm and a whack with a cold chisel is a common answer.
 
Got mine off with a lump hammer and a bolster chisel and beating it like a red headed step child :D

James what is a drift?

Local 4x4 garage quoted 2 hours to remove so that confirmed to me he is taking complete box off.

I want to learn the maintenance myself so garage is not an option.

Flat your hand on the grinder must be bloody steady!

BTW I didn't understand any abbreviations in this thread fyi

He just means a long steel bar that you hammer on the end of! ;)

It is usually possible to remove them, just needs the right kit and technique, and a bit of persistence.

Not too difficult to grind off either, just cut down till a mm short or so of the shaft, and wang a big cold chisel in the gap.

I spent about 30 hours on it... then ground it off..
 
Your local Landy garage only wants 2 hours to change what? if it is too remove the drop arm then not too bad.

May be worth the hassle , LOL

Yep exactly this, you don't actually have to split it much I am sure mine only expanded a fraction of a mm but it was enough that it let go
 
I wouldn't let a garage do it.. They don't understand the different types and tapers on the boxes if they fit a new one. I went to get a Drop arm from a LR garage (freelance) and he didn't see why I was paying big bucks quid when Britpart was about 8 quid.... His slid on with an inch.... mine slid on about 3 inches right to the bottom. The taper is different (we always fit the Britpart to all Defenders he said) It doesn't matter.
