Evening, had a leaking steering box so decided to replace it. Got a recon one from
LR in Liverpool, so not a cheap ebay spray up!.
Changed it over, bled it out so no air in the system(as far as I know!)
Took it for a spin, turn right no problem, turn left and no power assistance (or that's how it feels, maybe stiffer!) Re bled and still the same. On stands the wheels turns freely left and right no problem. took damper off to see if that was affecting it, still no left, took steering link arm off the drop link and box turns left and right no problem. Jacked it again an can turn the wheels by hand left and right so it's not the links/hubs.
When I turn right at full lock the engine speed drops and you can hear the power steering pump/box as normal(I'm sure you know what I mean), when you turn left full lock no noise, no drop in revs, it's as if it's not locking to the left, wheels are hitting the stops so there at full lock.
Any advice what it could be? I'm assuming it's not the pump as it's turning right no problem, fluids bubbling into the reservoir as normal.
Wondering if the refurb box could be faulty?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Did it do it with the old pas box? if the answer is no then the recon box must be at fault.
Contact them they might have a simple fix you can try.

That's what I was thinking, it worked fine before, just trying to see if maybe I've done something wrong, followed a guide ( https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/32377-disco-td5-pas-box-replacement/ ) and did each step, (apart from I reconnected the steering link as he seemed to forget that!), just wondered if I'd missed something.
Wouldn't mind but only changed it as it's had a very slight weep, thought why not let's sort it before it gets worse.
I'll ring them in the morning.
3/4 of a day wasted changing it, spent another half a day just looking at it!
Cheers.

Tbh I dont think there is anything to do wrong, people get infatuated with bleeding the system, fill it run it add more fluid lock to lock job done in my eyes.

I am always suspicious of anything reconditioned, as we have a few recon bits at work and pretty much every one of them plays up some time later on, gearboxes and pas boxes being the favourites.

Seen a few dodgy recons myself.

Small leaks, such as he describes^^^, are pretty common, mostly because the recon places change the seals, but don't change the shafts, which are often worn themselves.

But if you change all the shafts as well, the recon work out the same price as a new box.

Yeah bleed our is simple, easier than the brakes but when it didn't work I doubted myself!
I got it fran LR parts as I thought a refurb would have be either fully refurb, ie shafts as well as seals, but at least fully tested.
New box was £500 more so went for refurb.
I'll ring them tomorrow.
Cheers

Sorry been away!
So had another fiddle, took steering wheel link off and the drag link, pushing the drop link arm by hand, felt smooth going right , notchy going left so rang them on the Monday.
After a call back to me, asking if I'd bled it right, put arm on right etc.. they asked me to bring it back.
Wouldn't do a refund or straight exchange as it'd been fitted, had to go back to manufacturers for them to test. Only way I could have another box would be to buy one and then get a refund on the knackerd one after they've checked it. Didn't want to do that as I'll bet it'll come back with a note saying I've got crap into it or something along those lines so I'd end up not getting a refund then end up with 2 boxes. I was away last week anyway so left it with them. Said it could take upto 4 weeks!!
I won't be waiting that long!
I'll be on phone to them tomorrow, they've had it 2 weeks on Wednesday, can't tell me that's not long enough to send it back to them and test it?
Was thinking of just claiming on credit card as a mate said you can. Unfortunately Santander don't have that kind of insurance, just the standard consumer act stuff.
Well see what happens.
I'll let you know how I go on.
Cheers
Rich.
