The steering is rack and pinion. The Power steering fluid reservoir is on drivers side engine bay.
Squeaking is most likely suspension top bearings, on top of strut.
Have a good listen while someone turns the wheel.
Steering boxes went out of vogue about 1970 if I remember correctly.

Thanks, did what you said and it's definitely coming from the strut. Is something I can do repair myself or should I take it to a garage?

Unless you have spring compressors, and the knowledge to use them safely, it's best done by a reputable garage.

As above. Spring has to come off the strut and if not correctly handled can kill.

Having said that, I did have one once where the nut had come loose on the strut top. This can be checked by removing the coolant bottle one side and the fuse box the other.
Allen key holds strut and then tighten nut with spanner. Worth a look before paying anything.
