Hi guys

Little bit of play in my steering on the 200tdi Disco 1. More than the recommended 2" of movement side to side before much happens but not loads more. Just noticed the wheel having to turn slightly further in each direction and a slight vagueness when set straight.

I've read a guide on it and loosened the locknut (think it was 17mm) which also turned the allen key adjuster with it. I can't seem to turn the allen key adjuster and the locknut independently, and wondered if this is ever normal or the best way to approach.

Can i just unscrew the combined pair and take a look or will that cause a problem reinserting or anything (say if there was a retainer to be aware of falling in or something)

Cheers for any help!

I used a ring spanner on the nut and a hex in a socket on a breaker bar.
Someone holding the spanner whilst you go he-man on the bar helps.
Iirc, screwing the whole thing out is bad or maybe impossible, not sure..

Okay - so it's basically brute force to adjust it then! Fair enough.

I was definitely concerned about any implications of totally unscrewing them so I won't do that :)

you cant unscrew it fully, screw will turn with nut till sector shaft hits the top,you must ensure box is set central and rock input shaft by hand so you can feel play just been removed

You could also try something like plusgas on it for a few days before. The nut rusts to the bolt so once that's free you can turn the 'bolt' easy to adjust it. I can turn mine with my fingers.

Sometimes it is not possible to remove all the play from the wheels ahead position, as doing this will cause a bind on the less worn parts when going lock to lock. A compromise must be reached.

Thanks, yeah i'd read up on it and was aware that there is likely to be more wear straight ahead so a slight notch. I'll get out there and try and loosen it off, will try some deep penetrating oils and hopefully get a little bit of play out. There is a slight movement on the input shaft so i'll see what I can do. Cheers for help.
