Hello All,
My 2003 Discovery has decided it wants to do 3 chimes when i start it up every now and again. The 3 chimes is normally to do with ABS, however i have no warning lights on..

Any ideas?

Is it something to do with the HDC? That chimes when you select it in high range as it only works in low range

I dont think so, It happens without me changing anything and its not all the time, only sometimes, But regularly.

Strange

mine does this too was doing it last year in the winter, but doing it more often now especially if the night before is a cold one. I was thinking it was something to do with the car being parked on a forward angle on my driveway, and the oil being thicker in the morning. Could it be something to do with the oil movement round the engine, i only say this because if i stall the disco and start it up straight away it also chimes 3 times maybee this is linked. Anybody else out there with a disco 2 td5 doing the same?

I've got a Td5 and mine does the same thing. Thinking about it now, it does tend to be in the colder weather but I have never received any satisfactory reply s to what it is, there doesn't seem to be any visible problem nor is there any warning light illuminated. My drive is flat so that wouldn't seem to be a cause in my case but I havn't got a clue!

Like discool said, read yer handbook!

However, if you've not got one...

Get in, ignition to position 1, put seatbelt on, move seat / mirrors cos missus has been driving it, take boyzone cd out and snap it, then start up (all lights except batt and engine light out)= 3 chimes. Disco runs self-diagnostics on startup, ABS SLS HDC ACE etc. 3 chimes = all ok.

But, get in start straight up, screw off the driveway 'cos you're late for work = no chimes.

Give it a minute to wake up...at least you know it's happy then!

Ive already looked within my handbook. The only part i found '3chimes' is when the ABS is faulty, it states this should be met with a light though.

Mine does it all year round, cold or not..

It still starts, moves and brakes so... It cant be anything too bad, its always good to know its not just mine!!

The abs works then. The abs lamp should light when you start the engine, if not the bulb may have blown, unlikley as it's only on till the vehicle reaches 5mph then it go's out but it still can happen.

mine does to. I had it in to be looked at for something else and they said they cleared the chimes as its a common speed sebnsor fault or something like that. Not long later it started doign it again. I dont woorry about it now but i do think theres something in that about leaving all the lights to go off as mine is also intermittant.

the bcu can be set up to give 3 chimes to remind you to put your seat belt on and because the seat belts are not fitted with switches it will still do it even if your seat belt if fastend but if it is this then it will do it all the time
but what can happen is if there was a fault with the ABS ACE or SLS then as a cheap fix some one will take the bulb out so check they all come on when the ignition on look in the manual to see what there should be
