Hi everybody, I have a Freelander 1, 3 door sport TD4, that has a starter motor problem. turn the key and their is a loud click. and the engine fails to turn or start, the Landy has a good few miles on the clock as its used a lot. may I ask if you think the problem would be caused by worn ring gear/Benelux or is it more likely to be the electrics. sadly I am not in a position to remove the motor to have a look, so could I ask your for your thoughts please.

Thank you in advance

allan.

How olds the battery?
Have you tested the battery?
Are the battery terminals clean and tight?
Are the cable terminals on the starter motor clean and tight/
Is the earth point from the starter secure clean and tight? I have heard (some folk have had to put in a secondary earth cable)
Is the little control wire attached to the starter?
Have you checked that there is a voltage at the ignition?
Have you checked the main relay and fuses?
Lastly it may just be a worn solenoid.

That should keep you from needing to remove the starter motor just yet ;)

Ooops apart from the last one anyway

Thank you so much for the prompt replies, the Battery is new. I have been over the electrics checking all the terminals and cleaning things...I confess I have a feeling it is the solenoid. I shall investigate further. But your help is really appreciated Thank you :)

Have the car been parked for some time? Sometimes all thats needed its a hammer clunk on the starter to get it going again.
