If the motor is struggling to turn over then.

Worth checking the brushes, cleaning the commutator and scraping out between the segments before you buy a new one. A simple test on each pair of segments with an ohmeter will tell you if the repair is successful. Revived many over the years this way at very little expense.

It's not THAT bad to get it out.

Two bolts, 8mm Allen head on my 3.5 from memory. I did one on a 4.6 p38 and I think it was same.

Quite easy to physically remove, but a very oily area on that p38. Mine was too before regular washing.

I replaced mine with a britpart unit, 60 quid. Didnt see the point of dunking a more expensive unit under water. I was on the original which I kept cleaning out but then I exploded internally :)

The britpart is going very strongly btw 6 months down the line, and regular offroading abuse.

Cheers.

got it changed only took 5 days lol the top allen bolts rounded so had to cut it out (that was fun) but working again yay
