It is almost impossible to see the starter on my 1997 Disco 300 TDI let alone remove it without first removing other parts other parts.

What is the best way to get at it ?

If I remove the exhaust pipe can I remove it from below or do I also have to remove the manifold and turbo ?

Can I get at the starter solenoid connections without removing the starter ?

I now have a 300TDI and my starter solenoid is sticking - can anyone answer Kens original message. Thanks.

I've just replaced a working Bosch Starter on my 1997 Disco 1 with a new Prestolite, which I had just in case. The Prestolite lasted just one week before the solenoid malfunction. Looks like I'll be refitting the Bosch tomorrow.

Best bet is to get at it from the underside.

The turbo oil pipes get in the way a bit, but if you undo the 3 exhaust nuts from the manifold, you can get enough play in the exhaust (they have a flexi on them so no damage will be caused unless its shot) that you can then get the turbo out then once it clears the stud angle it down and withdraw it from the bottom.

Remember to disconnect your battery!

I removed mine from above - those instructions on the link sum it up pretty well. I have the Defender solid front pipe so not very accessible from below.
