to be honest i know v.v.v.little bout cars but i am willing to learn!
first problem is that when i am say reversing or crawling forward very slowly something in the engine is making a squeeling sound? any ideas?

secondly, changing gear feels like a big effort. i know that my car is like quite old but i was wondering if there was a way of making the gear change less grindy?

thanks for any help!

Giz a bit more information then.
You've got a '91 2.5Td what?
Where is the squeeling sound coming from?
When did you last change the gearbox oil?
Are both the points related?

Find out what vehicle you've got and post in the correct department.

Do buck up a bit or you might get blondes a reputation for being dumb!

A belt perhaps? Spray some belt dressing onto the belts to see if the noise stops. If it does, they're on their way out so get some new ones.

Have you got oil in the gearbox? It could be that simple :)

a long shot, but it may be a brake binding.
check the temperature of the front discs or rear drums after taking it for a run. if one is abnormally hot, then theres the problem.

Crunchy gear change??? are you new to LRs??? the boxes don't like to be rushed. you can get some different oil that is supposed to make it easier.
try this link: www.difflock.com/cgi-bin/wm10/wm10_02606/st/ws20_9800/main/browse.cgi?in_store=5001&cust_cat=Oils+and+Fluids&item_id=DF247&final_pick=y&setup_value=1&pick_flag=y&clean_up=nwww.difflock.com/cgi-bin/wm10/wm10_...l_pick=y&setup_value=1&pick_flag=y&clean_up=n

thankyou for ur patience with me GRUNT! lol i am new to LR this is my first and its a discovery 2.5td. plenty of oil and all that in. i am thinking it could be the power steering or fan belt? could i be on the right lines?
as for the gear thing the more i am driving it the easier its getting. the box doesnt like to be rushed and i think the problems i had were just me being a little to rough with it.
i assure you im not really as dumb as the name would suggest, just a little clueless about my car.
thanks for getting back to me tho people!

Quite right it could be either of the drive belts try spraying with wd40 this isn't a fix but the noise will go away temporarily, you could check the tension 9mm in the steering pump belt and 12mm in the alternator belt.

As for the gearbox, no they don't like to be rushed, try double de-clutching.
