I have a 98 S-10 Blazer LT with the 4.3 vortec v-6. This is an excellent
vehicle except for one thing. It will fail to start, usually at the worst
times. When it is running, it runs excellent, fuel pressure checks out,
have a new battery and alternator. Have no discharge problems. Have
noticed the ammeter needle quiver a little. When it fails to start, it
will turn over just fine but will not start. Replaced the fuel pump relay.
Did not help. When I have it put on an analyzer, you guessed it, it starts
up (after not starting for a week). Can't check a problem if it's not
happening. Electrical check shows everything OK. Battery connections clean
and tight. What is going on??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

you may need a more powerful battery, and all new cables.

A couple of simple diagnostic tools that might help, and they're small and
cheap enough that you can just toss them in the glovebox so you can test
next time it has the problem, wherever you are.

1. Starting fluid. If you spray starting fluid into the air intake then
start it, does it run for a couple of seconds and then die? If so, it's a
fuel problem (most likely the fuel pump, the one on my '95 S-10 Blazer
failed right around 100K).

2. Extra spark plug. Pull one wire off and connect it to your extra spark
plug. Hold the insulated boot so that the metal threads are touching the
metal engine block and have a helper crank the engine. You should see a
spark. If you don't, it's an ignition problem. I have had bad distributors
cause the random on/off behavior you describe.

Have you checked the fuel pressure when it is cranking and will not
start?
