Hi folks, I have just replaced my instrument binnacle and mount on my Defender. Having taken it out for a test ride, the speedo is slow to start reading then sticky, and slow to reduce to zero when stopped.

Has anyone got any ideas how to cure it? Everything else is working ok.

Did you replace the speedo cable?

1995, I did not replace the cable, just unplugged it and reconnected it.

When you say replaced, do you mean a new unit or second hand?

I bought a new instrument binnacle and mount (raptor metal version) and transferred all of the existing instruments.

My mistake, binnacle not speedo the symptoms are usually associated with a dried out or worn speedo cab. You could try lubricating it, but for £20 you can get a new one. You might have pinched the existing cable or disturbed some dirt etc

Last time I replaced mine, I disconnected at the gearbox, slipped the sleeve off, ran the new sleeve down the inner, then slid the new sleeve over that, which follows the original course and Robert's your mother's sister's brother!

It should be a straightforward job but in reality it isn't. The cable follows an interesting path and if like me @Oldseadog you cannot get it round the twists and turns you have to like me choose a different route. Just don't buy an uber cheap cable as the speedo connector will be poor quality and fail IMO.

Someone recently suggested taping a bag to the top of the cable and pouring in oil, leaving 24 hours to ensure its fully lubricated before fitting.

Thank you all, something to try and sort this weekend. The speedo was over reading by about 8 mph anyway. Now onto the rattle on the exhaust and towing electrics.
